Most POD shops fail not because the idea was bad, but because of preventable operational mistakes. These five errors account for most of the first-time failures.

Mistake 1: Uploading low-resolution artwork

The most common error. A 72 DPI image that looks fine on screen will print blurry. Always export at 300 DPI. Test actual print samples if possible. This single error kills entire batches of products.

Fix: Create a file checklist before upload. 300 DPI minimum, CMYK color mode, trim area marked. Do not skip this.

Mistake 2: Pricing too low or too high

New shops often price at 30% markup (barely covering cost) or try 200% markup (no one buys). The viable range is 50-100% margin depending on niche and product complexity.

Fix: Research competitor pricing. Calculate your actual production cost (not what the platform shows). Price to cover cost plus 60% margin at launch. Lower it once volume proves demand.

Mistake 3: Too many products, no focus

Launching with 50 designs across 10 product types splits attention and budget. Your audience cannot understand what you are about. Start with 6-12 focused designs in one or two product categories.

Fix: Ruthlessly cut at launch. More products later. Quality and clarity now.

Mistake 4: No pre-launch audience building

Launching to zero followers guarantees zero sales in week one. You need an audience before you launch.

Fix: Build email list and social presence for 4-6 weeks before launch. Aim for 100+ people who know what is coming.

Mistake 5: Not tracking which products are actually selling

You cannot iterate if you do not know what moved. Too many POD shops design blindly, hoping something works. Data-driven design wins.

Fix: Set up analytics from day one. Track clicks, add-to-cart, and sales by product. Review weekly. Kill what does not move. Double down on winners.

Fix these five mistakes and you are already ahead of 80% of first-time POD launches.
